What kind of gas mileage are you getting with a Chevy 3500HD Durmax Dually, towing and not towing?

I get 10 towing and 16 without the MS. On board 75 gal diesel tank, tool box all the time. Usually travel with 2 dogs and without DW for work.

I get about the same but the wind can have a large impact when towing as you all know. It also can vary whether or not I am towing the MS. Maybe due to how clogged the diesel particluate filter is. My duramax is a 2007.5 with 60k miles. I found out how much smog control stuff is on the truck a few weeks ago when bolts holding two flanges together on my exhaust system came out ahead of the muffler. I heard a clicking sound and found the exhaust came totally apart in front of the muffler which didn't increase the sound of the truck one bit. It was as if the muffler wasn't even needed.

I am currently on a trip from Texas traveling west through Arizona, Northern California and up the Oregon coast (presently). Therefore, have experienced various travel conditions pulling my ES. Also have a 50 gal aux tank, so I've got a heavy load to pull. My 2011 Chevy 3500 dually tows the ES very easily. Milage has varied on different legs of the trip (due to terrain) from 9.2 to 11.2 mpg. I had to make a trip from Florence, Or to Portland without the ES (350 miles rt) and got 18.5 mpg.

We have a 2011 GMC dually with a 50 gal in bed tank. 65 mph (1600 rpm) flat pulling with 38" MS we get 10.5 to 10.8 mpg per the on board computer and about 18-18.5 mpg w/o trailer. Throw in some hills or a head wind and this can drop to 9.5 mpg

We just returned from a trip from our home in the poccano Mts. in NE PA to Niagara Falls, NY, steep hills all the way, with a steady head wind on the way up. We averaged 10.5 mpg towing our 38RL3. While touring around Niagara averaged 15.6 mpg. When DH used truck to drive to work about 40 miles round trip he averages 17mpg. 2007 Chevy Silverado Dually Duramax with 34000 miles.

Just a curiosity question. Cary mentioned that his mileage was using the computer readout. Are the rest of you using the computer for your mileage, or are you actually calculating based on miles and gallons used?

    Hi Terry,

I use the total miles driven divided by the gallons used (when I refill the tank). I've found that the computer in mine is much too optimistic. I have multiple GM products and the computers in each are very generous with the MPG readings.

I've also experienced a one to two MPG variance depending upon the weather/wind conditions and roadway/traffic.

I'm getting about 10.5 with the fifth wheel in tow @ 65 mph. With a head wind it will drop into the 9 mpg range. I track it with both the on board computer and manually.
